#OnThisDay 1920 After the shooting of RIC Constable Luke Finnegan (pic), a party of RIC & Sherwood Foresters (of 1916/Executions fame) ran amok in Thurles. They shot down streets & raided local republican premises. This was known as the “Sacking of Thurles”. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1902 Kevin Barry was born in Dublin. Barry, a medical student, had taken part in an ambush of British soldiers. He was captured, tortured & sentenced to death. Barry was the first republican prisoner to be hanged in the Irish War of Independence. He was 18.
#OnThisDay 1920 The IRA launched an unsuccessful attack on Drumbane RIC barracks in Tipperary. Detonating a mine against a gable wall, it did not blast a hole through for the attackers & ladders used to scale the roof were too short. The IRA had to withdraw. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1917 Lieutenant-Commander Ralph Ireland from 17 Malone Park, Belfast was washed overboard the HMS Southampton in the North Sea. Ireland & the HMS Southampton were at the Battle of Jutland where they torpedoed& sank the German SMS Frauenlob. He was 28.
