#OnThisDay 1577 140 men led by Rory Óg O’More and Cormac MacCormack O’Connor ran through Naas like “haggs and furies of hell, with flakes of fire fastened on poles“, and burned over 700 thatched houses. A price of £1000 was put on their heads by the Crown. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 2002 Thomas Shaw from Belfast, the last WW1 veteran from the island of Ireland passed away. In 1916 Shaw joined the Royal Irish Rifles at 15. Shaw missed the Somme as his brother, an MP, found him & sent him home but he rejoined the Rifles & fought at Ypres, Messines and other major battles.

#OnThisDay 1915 Pte Thomas Hope from Mullingar was executed at dawn for desertion. In December Hope was told his two brothers had been killed &he left his post. He was captured, escaped&made it back to his unit by Feb 10th. He was not defended in his trial. #Ireland #History #WW1

#OnThisDay 1915 Lt. Joseph Charles Tyndall was killed in action in Belgium during WW1. Tyndall was 4th Batt Royal Dublin Fusiliers but attached to Royal Irish Rifles.Tyndall was from Monkstown, Dublin & educated in Castleknock College. He was 22 years old. #Ireland #History #WW1
