#OnThisDay 1921 RIC Constable Michael Hickey (Not Pictured) was executed by George Lennon of the West Waterford IRA after being captured at the Burgery Ambush. His final words were “George, I knew you as a child, you are the only person in the world that can save me”. Lennon replied he couldn’t.
#OnThisDay 1921 Tom Barry & the West Cork IRA was encircled & outnumbered 10 to 1 by the British army at Crossbarry. With their back against the wall, Tom Barry ambushed a small British patrol, then fought their way out of the trap, killing 10 & losing 4 men.
#OnThisDay 1919 Dublin IRA, led by Patrick Holahan, raid Collinstown Aerodrome (now @dublinairport ) & take 75 rifles, 72 bayonets & 4000 rounds of ammo. This was the IRA’s most successful raid, which involved sleeping sentries, getaway cars, British army uniforms, drugging dogs & more. Holahan had just started work there a few weeks previous and knew the inner workings of the place.
#OnThisDay 1924 Having signed an ultimatum to the Government Maj. Gen. Liam Tobin (Pic) & others who were disgruntled with the demobilisation of the Army & preference for Ex-British Army officers mutinied, took arms & raided a hotel in Dublin. It was quashed peacefully by the Government.
