#OnThisDay 1811 Stephen Moylan, from Cork, Cavalry Commander of the Continental Army, Aide-de-Camp to George Washington & creator of the first recorded use of the term “United States of America”, passed away. In a letter written in January 1776 (bottom pic) Moylan penned the term. This is the earliest recorded version of this.

#OnThisDay 1917 Cpl John Cunningham, from Thurles, was commanding a machine gun nest that was attacked by 20 Germans. Although wounded he repulsed the attack. When his ammo ran out, he used grenades. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died four days later.

#OnThisDay 1920 Women gather outside of Mountjoy Prison in Dublin to protest the continued incarceration of Republican hunger-strikers. Their sign reads
“THEY (Britain) MURDER
THE INNOCENT
IN VENGEANCE”
#OnThisDay 1861 The American Civil War began with the attack on the Union held Fort Sumter. Throughout this conflict, 200,000 Irish born men served. The first casualty was Roscommon man Pte Daniel Hough.
