#OnThisDay 1920 Thomas Mulholland, Quartermaster for the Dundalk IRA was shot dead on Bridge Street during a raid by RIC Sergeant Bustard. The IRA ordered Bustard to leave or be killed so he retired from the RIC & fled Dundalk in the middle of the night some days later. He moved to Belfast then to America after the Civil War.
#OnThisDay 1941 Over 200 Luftwaffe planes bomb Belfast for more than 6 hours killing over 900 people, destroying 50,000 homes & leaving 100,000 homeless. Outside of London, this attack caused the greatest loss of life in a single night during the Blitz. #Ireland #History #WW2
#OnThisDay 1921 Auxiliary Company Commander Lt. John MacKinnon, a man with “the air of ruthless military efficiency’, was shot while playing golf in Tralee. MacKinnon had been in charge of some notorious reprisals in the area, inlcuding burning houses, creameries & shootings. IRA Volunteer (& WW1 Vet) James Healy shot MacKinnon with a rifle from up a tree as MacKinnon tee’d up a shot. Healy managed to get two shots off which both hit MacKinnon in the head. Several other Auxiliaries were present but they were not the target and were left unscathed.
#OnThisDay 1919 The Limerick Soviet began. This was a general strike protesting the ‘Special Military Area’ in the city, organised by the Trades and Labour Council. They printed money, published newspapers, controlled food production. But it ended by April 27th.
#OnThisDay 1848 Thomas Francis Meagher unveiled the Irish tricolour to a crowd at the Irish Convention in Dublin. “I trust that beneath its folds the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood”.
