#OnThisDay 1916 The SS Aud (SS Libau) carrying 20,000 rifles, 10 machine guns & ammunition for the Rising was surrounded by British warships & made surrender. The ship had no radio so could not contact Volunteers on shore to organise unloading of the cargo.
#OnThisDay 1916 Sir Roger Casement landed at Banna Strand, Kerry via the German submarine U-19. Suffering from a malarial illness, Casement was too weak to travel. He was arrested within a few hours. His plans to cancel or to arm the Rising had failed. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1916 Henry Hogan from Clare died in Miles City, Montana. Hogan is one of 14 men who have received the Congressional Medal of Honor twice. An incredible feat, but Hogan won these medals in the Great Sioux War 1876-77 fighting against Native Americans.

#OnThisDay 1176 Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke better known as Strongbow died in Dublin. Strongbow led the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century.For restoring Dermot MacMurrough’s kingdom of Leinster, Strongbow married his daughter Aoife.
The Irish at War
