#OnThisDay 1864 A Union Army mine was detonated under Confederate lines at the Battle of the Crater, creating a crater 130 ft long, 60 ft wide & 30ft deep. Irish man Jerry Sullivan from 57th Mass. Inf. rushed in & was never seen again. The Union lost the battle.

#OnThisDay 1921 Cathal Brugha wrote a letter to a Mrs E. Benson informing her that her sister, Mrs Maria Lindsay (pic)had been executed by the IRA in Cork. Lindsay had been shot for giving information to the British which resulted in the execution of 5 IRA men.

#OnThisDay 1916 Pte John Mahony from Ennis, Clare was KIA almost a year from his first wedding anniversary. Mahony married Bridget Moriarty & 10 days later left rejoin his unit. Bridget, a widow by 22, never remarried & commissioned this painting of them.

#OnThisDay 1848 The Young Irelander Rising broke out. Lead by William Smith O’Brien, T. F. Meagher & others, the rebels surrounded the (R)IC in a widow’s house for several hours but dispersed when police backup arrived.
The leaders were deported to Tasmania.
