#OnThisDay 1913 The Dublin Strike and Lockout began. This dispute, which lasted until January, was over workers’ rights, conditions & ability to form unions. The Irish Citizen Army was formed to protect strikers demonstrations from heavy-handed police charges.
#OnThisDay 1915 Private George Gallagher from Bellaghy, Derry was killed in action in Gallipoli. In the trenches even the most mundane tasks were dangerous. Gallagher volunteered to get water & was shot by a sniper. He was 20 years old.
#OnThisDay 1803 Robert Emmet was captured in Harold’s Cross.After his rebellion failed, instead of leaving for France, Emmet chose to be with his fiancé, Sarah Curran. He was taken to Dublin Castle, then Kilmainham Gaol, tried for high treason and was executed.
#OnThisDay 1580 Fiach MacHugh O’Byrne ‘The Firebrand’ & Viscount Baltinglas of the Pale, defeated an English army under viceroy Baron Grey de Wilton, at the Battle of Glenmalure, home of O’Byrnes’ mountain stronghold. English casualties ranged between 300-800.
#OnThisDay 1945 General Dwight Eisenhower received the freedom of the city of Belfast. He wrote; ‘I am happy to be back again in Northern Ireland, for it is the first spot to which American troops came to prepare for the invasion of Germany.’
