#OnThisDay 1830 Dr. Bernard J.D. Irwin, the first Medal of Honor recipient(chronologically by action)was born in Roscommon. Awarded for his actions as assistant surgeon on 13 Feb 1861 during the Apache Wars, but he didnt receive it until he retired in Jan 1894.
RIC District Inspector Michael Hunt was shot dead 1919
#OnThisDay 1919 RIC District Inspector Michael Hunt was shot dead in Liberty Square, Thurles by IRA Volunteer Jim Stapleton. Three shots were fired, two hitting &instantly killing Hunt. The third hit a 12 year old boy in the left knee but wasn’t seriously hurt.
Battle of Goresbridge, Kilkenny 1798
#OnThisDay 1798 The United Irishmen scored a victory over Wexford Militia at Goresbridge, Kilkenny. The Militia tried to hold the bridge but were pushed off, losing all their cavalry & twenty eight soldiers were captured while the remainder fled to Kilkenny.
Assassination of Sir Henry Wilson, London 1922
#OnThisDay 1922 Sir Henry Wilson, ex-head of British Army & Unionist politician, was assassinated by the IRA at his home in London. It is said that his death was ordered by Michael Collins (though never proven) & was in response to the Catholic deaths in Ulster.
