#OnThisDay 1914 Ordinary Seaman Herbert Daley from Lurgan was 1 of 6 Ulster men Killed in Action when their ship HMS Pathfinder was sank by U-21. HMS Pathfinder was unluckily the first ship to be sank by locomotive torpedoes from a submarine.

#OnThisDay 1798 at the Battle of Collooney, Sligo, Lieutenant Bartholomew Teeling charged out of the Franco-Irish line & single-handedly disabled a Crown gun by shooting the gunner, then returned to his men. This caused the French to push & the Crown retreated.

#OnThisDay 1939 Willie Murphy from Cork was the first RAF Bomber pilot to be shot down. Also shot down that day was Larry Slattery (pic) from Tipperary. Slattery became the longest serving POW of WW2 & spent time in the famous Stalag Luft III camp.

#OnThisDay 1922 Liam Pilkington, Anti-Treaty IRA captured Dromahair barracks in Leitrim. Disillusioned with the Civil War, he became a priest & served in Cape Town & Liverpool where he died in in 1977.

#OnThisDay 1607 Hugh O’Neill & 90 of his followers left Ireland from Rathmullan, Donegal in what became known as “The Flight of the Earls”. They hoped to build an army on the continent & return to Ireland. They never saw home again. O’Neill died in Rome in 1616.
