I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. The Soloheadbeg Ambush Tipperary 1919

#OnThisDay 1919 Seán Treacy, Dan Breen &men from the 3rd Tipperary Brigade held up a RIC patrol carrying gelignite in Soloheadbeg. They shot dead two RIC officers & stole the explosives. This action is considered the official start the Irish War of Independence.

The First Dáil Meet in the Mansion House, Dublin 1919

#OnThisDay 1919 The First Dáil assembled in the Mansion House in Dublin. Only 27 of the 73 Sinn Féin TDs were present as most were in prison in England, including Éamon de Valera & Arthur Griffith. This coincided with the start of the War of Independence.

Ireland & Bohemians Footballer Harold Alexander Sloan KIA 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 Irish International footballer Harold Sloan, from Castleknock, was killed in action at the Somme. Sloan was a left winger for @bfcdublin, scoring the first ever goal at Dalymount Park & captained Ireland scoring a hat-trick against Wales.

Longford Priest, Fr. Henry Edgeworth at King Louis XVI’s Execution 1793

#OnThisDay 1793 King of France, Louis XVI was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. On the scaffold he was tended to by an Irish priest from Longford, Fr. Henry Edgeworth. Edgeworth won the respect from the sans-culottes for his devotion to duty.

London Irish Rifles lose 250 men in Tunisia 1943

#OnThisDay 1943 London Irish Rifles fight for positions near, Bou Arada, Tunisia. They lost 250 men over two days from German artillery & armoured counterattacks before consolidating their position. Among the dead were Cpl Hall from Tipperary & Pte Murphy from Cork.
