I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Execution of Silken Thomas 1537

#OnThisDay 1537 Silken Thomas Fitzgerald & his five uncles were hanged, drawn & quartered at Tyburn, London. Lord Deputy of Ireland, Lord Grey personally guaranteed Thomas’s safety & life would be spared if he surrendered in 1535. Thomas died, aged 24.

British Embassy Burnt Down in Dublin after Bloody Sunday 1972

#OnThisDay 1972 Eleven funerals were held in Derry for most of the victims who died on Bloody Sunday. Meanwhile, in Dublin, thousands protested outside of the British Embassy & set it alight. A coffin effigy with 13 written on it was left at the door.

Black and Tans Murder Local Magistrate, Wicklow 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 During a robbery, local magistrate Robert Dixon was murdered by two Black and Tans, William Mitchell & Arthur Hardie in Dunlavin, Wicklow. Hardie took his own life the next day so Mitchell (pic) was charged and later hanged for this crime.

The Clonfin Ambush 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Sean MacEoin & Longford IRA ambushed a patrol of 17 Auxiliaries at Clonfin. The IRA detonated a mine under an Auxie truck & after a firefight 4 Auxies were killed & 8 wounded. The Auxies eventually surrendered & MacEoin treated their wounded.

Drimoleague IRA Ambush RIC Patrol Killing One 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 IRA ambushed a 4 man RIC patrol in Drimoleague, Cork. Daniel O’Driscoll, the IRA leader shouted ‘Fire. Let them have it boys.’ Const Patrick O’Connor, a 22 year old WW1 Royal Navy veteran from Mayo, was killed & another constable wounded.
