#OnThisDay 1916 Elizabeth Grace Stewart, from Limerick, a staff nurse with Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service passed away from an illness she contracted on duty from the soldiers she cared for at Cambridge Military Hospital.

The Sinking of USS Maine, Havana Cuba 1898

#OnThisDay 1898 An explosion tore USS Maine apart in Havana, killing over 260 crew. Among the dead were:
Mike Harrington(Cork)& Joseph Seery(Kildare).
Spain was blamed for this which led to the Spanish-American War. The real cause was a fire in the coal bunker.

Four Irish Peacekeepers Killed in Road Accident in Lebanon 2000

#OnThisDay 2000 Four Irish UN Peacekeepers were killed in a road traffic accident in Lebanon when their mini-bus hit an oil slick & crashed, just as they were heading off on leave.

Tragic Love Story for Valentine’s Day

On 28th June 1922 John Kennedy, ran to the Pro Cathedral during a lull in fighting on O’Connell Street to get married to his love Mary Douglas. He returned to duty after the ceremony & was fatally wounded. Mary never remarried.

Róisín Madigan O’Reilly, Youngest CnaB Member Passed Away 1974

#OnThisDay 1974 Róisín Madigan O’Reilly passed away in Dingle, Kerry. In 1916 O’Reilly was the youngest member of Cumann na mBán at the age of 13!! Later in life Róisin worked on preservation of many Irish works like the Brehon Laws & stories of Peig Sayers.
