I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. #OnThisDay 1937 Two Irishmen, Lt Tom Hyde (Cork) & Lt Dan Chute (pic) were killed while serving in the Irish Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. The Irish were fired upon by friendly pro-Franco forces from the Canaries who did not recognise the uniforms.

Mrs Lindsay & James Clarke Kidnapped by IRA, Cork 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Mrs Maria Lindsay & her driver James Clarke were taken hostage by the IRA. Lindsay was held in hope to be exchanged for 5 IRA Vols sentenced to death in Cork. The 5 IRA were executed & in turn so were Lindsay & Clarke, their bodies never found.

Four IRA Killed by Essex Reg at Crois na Leanbh, Cork 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Four IRA Volunteers were shot dead by soldiers of the Essex Regiment, after they were caught digging a trench across a road at Crois na Leanbh, Cork. Their bodies were left by the roadside.

Death of Desmond O’Brien, Baron Inchiquin, 1915

#OnThisDay 1915 Flight Lieutenant The Hon. Desmond O’Brien, son of the 14th Baron Inchiquin from Dromoland Castle, Clare was killed in action when his Royal Naval Air Service plane was shot down off Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast. He was 19.

The Upton Train Ambush 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 A small IRA column ambushed a train at Upton, Cork. Expecting a handful of British soldiers onboard, the IRA’s intel was incorrect as there was 50. A firefight ensued that saw the death of three IRA & eight civilians and many wounded on all sides.
