Hi, I'm David, I'm from Ireland. I am an avid fan of history. I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Pte Michael Hardiman, Ballaghadereen, KIA Korea 1951

#OnThisDay 1951 Pte Michael Hardiman, from Ballaghadereen, Roscommon was killed in action during Operation Ripper in the Korean War. Hardiman was living in Philadelphia with his sister before being drafted. He is buried back home in Roscommon.

Knocknagoshel Mine Kerry 1923

#OnThisDay 1923 Five Free State soldiers were killed by an IRA booby trap mine in Knocknagoshel, Kerry. They were lured into a field with false info of a IRA dugout in a field. The next day the Free State Army exacted their revenge IRA prisoners in Ballyseedy.

The Alamo 1836

#OnThisDay 1836 The Alamo fell after a 13 day siege. Nearly 2000 Mexican soldiers stormed the Alamo & killed its 183 defenders. At least 11 of the defenders were Irish born men like Derry men Major Robert Evans or William Ward, who was possibly first to die.

The Cloonbannin Ambush, Cork 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Cork & Kerry IRA ambushed & killed Brig Gen H.R. Cumming at Clonbanin, Cork. Annie Barrett, a telephonist overheard Cummings’s movements on a phone call & shared the details. The IRA ambushed the five vehicle convoy & killed around 4-6 soldiers.

The Fenian Uprising 1867

#OnThisDay 1867 Thousands of Fenians rebel all over Ireland aiming to end British rule. 4000 in Cork, 1000 in Drogheda & 7,000 gather in Tallaght hoping to take Dublin. They carried this 32 starred flag. After a skirmish with police, the Dublin Fenians fled.
