#OnThisDay 1921 Cork IRA executed 60 year Mrs Mary Lindsay & her driver James Clark. IRA Frank Busteed said ‘I told her she was going to die. She never blinked an eye. I will say this for her bravery, she was excellent’. The location of their remains is unknown.
#OnThisDay 1921 Sean Connolly & five IRA (named in pics) men were killed by RIC & British troops at an ambush at Selton Hill, Leitrim. According to Ernie O’Malley, the British soldiers shouted out “Fresh meat” as they transported the dead bodies into Mohill.
#OnThisDay 1858 Thomas Clarke, was born to Irish parents on the Isle of Wight. Clarke, arguably the main instigator of the Easter Rising, spent 15 years in prison beforehand. First signature on the Proclamation & one of the first three leaders to be executed.
#OnThisDay 2015 US Marine Staff Sgt Liam Flynn from Kildare was killed during a training exercise in Florida when the helicopter he was aboard crashed. Flynn was serving with the Marines Special Operations Command & had completed tours of Iraq & Afghanistan.
#OnThisDay 1967 US Marine Corporal Bernard Freyne, from Ballaghaderreen, was killed in action in Quang Nam province during the Vietnam War. Serving with the 1st Marine Division, Freyne was KIA by an explosive device. He is buried back home in Ballaghaderreen.
