I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Clifden Reprisals 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Galway IRA ambushed an RIC patrol in Clifden killing two constables. This was in response for the the execution of local man Thomas Whelan in Mountjoy on the 14th. Crown Forces burned 16 houses in Clifden & killed an ex-soldier in reprisals.

Robert Barton Escapes from Mountjoy Prison 1919

#OnThisDay 1919 Sinn Féin TD Robert Barton (middle) escaped from Mountjoy Prison. Before he left, Barton left a note for the Warden;
“I am about to make an escape from your hospitality. If I escape, well and good”.

You wouldn’t see the likes of it on Airbnb!!

The Drumboe Martyrs Executed, Donegal 1923

#OnThisDay 1923 Four IRA men were executed at Drumboe Castle, the only executions to take place in Donegal. The dead are:
Charlie Daly-O.C. Second Northern Division (pic)
Seán Larkin-O.C. South Derry Brigade
Timothy O’Sullivan
Daniel Enright

The Great Brunswick (Pearse) Street Raid 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 A patrol of Auxiliaries was ambushed on its way to raid an IRA HQ on Great Brunswick (Pearse) Street. Two Auxies, two Volunteers & three civilians were killed (including the brother of the Dublin’s Lord Mayor) & several of each group wounded.
