I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Captain Richard Hemphill RFC

#OnThisDay 1917 Captain Richard Hemphill RFC from Birr, Offaly died near Cairo, when he fell out of his airplane. Originally with the 6th Leinsters, Hemphill was a medical student in Trinity before the war & often volunteered in Dublin’s missions.

The Scramogue Ambush, Roscommon 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Roscommon IRA ambushed a truck carrying British Army & Black and Tans at Scramogue, near Strokestown. Three of the crown forces were killed in the attack. The IRA took rifles, a machine gun, ammo & two British prisoners who were later executed.

The Clogheen Massacre, Cork 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Six members of IRA Cork No. 1 Brigade were killed by Black and Tans at Clogheen outside of Cork City. The post-mortem found that the bodies of the six men were badly shot up at close range indicating that they were killed after surrendering.

The Battle of Kernstown 1862

#OnThisDay 1862 Brig. Gen. James Shields from Tyrone defeated Confederate General Stonewall Jackson at the Battle of Kernstown. Shields’s force outnumbered Jackson’s 2:1. Although wounded, Shields’s men under Col. Kimball drove the Confederates from the field.

The Choctaw Nation Donate $170 for the Irish Famine 1847

#OnThisDay 1847 Leaders of the Choctaw Nation gathered in Oklahoma & collected $170 for “the relief of the starving poor in Ireland”. This gift was to help Irish people during the Famine, from a people who had also suffered expulsion, death & misery.
