I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Dundalk IRA First Casualty Thomas Mulholland 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Thomas Mulholland, Quartermaster for the Dundalk IRA was shot dead on Bridge Street during a raid by RIC Sergeant Bustard. The IRA ordered Bustard to leave or be killed so he retired & fled Dundalk in the middle of the night some days later.

Cpl John Cunningham VC 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 Cpl John Cunningham VC from Thurles died from his wounds suffered on the 12th. While severely wounded & under attack, he used all his ammo stalling the enemy & then he threw grenades at them to stall their advance. For this he got the VC.

The Irish Brigade at the Battle of Culloden 1746

#OnThisDay 1746 A selection of men from the Irish Brigade of France & Fitzjames’s Horse fought at the Battle of Culloden. They fought for Bonnie Prince Charles but were defeated. They covered the Highlanders’s retreat & lost a lot of men in the fight.

Belfast Blitz 1941

#OnThisDay 1941 About 180 Luftwaffe planes dropped 203 tons of explosives on Belfast killing over 900 people, causing the greatest loss of life in a single night during the Blitz, outside of London. Fire engines came from Dublin & Louth to quench the fires.

Lt. John MacKinnon Killed by IRA Tralee 1921

#Onthisday 1921 Auxiliary Company Commander Lt. John MacKinnon, a man with “the air of ruthless military efficiency’, was shot while playing golf in Tralee. IRA Vol. James Healy (a WW1 Vet) shot him with a rifle from up a tree as MacKinnon tee’d up a shot.
