I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Margaret Skinnider Sniper in 1916 Rising

#OnThisDay 1892 Margaret Skinnider was born in Scotland to Irish parents. A maths teacher by trade, Margaret fought as a sniper in the Easter Rising in 1916, the only female combatant wounded in action. “Doing my bit for Ireland” is her autobiography. #Ireland #History

1798: United Irishmen Rebels take Enniscorthy

#OnThisDay 1798 United Irishmen take the town of Enniscorthy driving the 300+strong garrison back to Wexford. Rebels lose roughly 500, the British forces about 100. Many residents flee also as hundreds of houses are set alight during the attack.

Aer Lingus takes to the air 1936

#OnThisDay 1936 The first @AerLingus flight took place from the @IrishAirCorps Baldonnell airfield. Captain Eric Armstrong flew three dignitaries & two paying customers from Dublin to Bristol on a de Havilland DH.84 Dragon called Iolar (Irish for Eagle).

The Battle of Oulart Hill 1798

#OnThisDay 1798 A poorly armed force of 4,000 rebels under Fr. John Murphy ambush a much smaller but better armed detachment of North Cork Militia killing 105 & leaving only 5 survivors. North Wexford joins the rebellion after this win.

The Battle of Clontibret 1595

#OnThisDay 1595 Hugh O’Neill attacked an English army column led by Sir Henry Bagenal (his brother in law) at Clontibret, Monaghan. O’Neill’s 4000 men killed hundreds of Bagenal’s without suffering many losses themselves.O’Neill would beat Bagenal again in 1598
