#OnThisDay 1921 Constable Albert Carter (pic), a 20 year old Black and Tan from Kildare, was killed when his five man patrol were fired on by the IRA moments before they attacked an RIC barracks in Letterkenny. Carter was hit in the throat & died immediately.

Death of Captain Edmond De Vere Pery 1918
#OnThisDay 1918 Captain Edmond De Vere Pery, son of the 4th Earl of Limerick, from Dromore Castle, was KIA. Pery, an RAF pilot, was shot out of the sky, crash landed into no-man’s land but survived, then the Germans then shelled onto his position & killed him.
The Dublin and Monaghan Bombings 1974
#OnThisDay 1974 Three bombs were detonated across rush hour Dublin & a fourth in Monaghan town. 34 people were killed including a pregnant woman & unborn child, the entire O’Brien family & more.The loyalist UVF claimed responsibility but nobody was ever charged.
The German Plot 1918
#OnThisDay 1918 Over 75 Sinn Féin leaders are arrested & interned under the “German Plot”, i.e. a German backed military rebellion in Ireland, for actively opposing the introduction of conscription. There was no plot, it had been created by the British.
The Siege of Clonmel 1650
#OnThisDay 1650 Hugh Dubh O’Neill inflicts the highest number of casualties (3000) on Oliver Cromwell’s army at the Siege of Clonmel. Cromwell negotiated fair terms of surrender with the mayor not knowing that O’Neill’s army had already slipped out of the town.
