Hi, I'm David, I'm from Ireland. I am an avid fan of history. I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. John Barry, “Father of the US Navy” appointed Continental Navy’s first Captain 1775

#OnThisDay 1775 John Barry from Wexford, the “Father of the @USNavy” (a shared nickname with two others) was appointed Captain. He was the first Captain in command of a warship in the American Continental navy & later the first Flag Officer as Commodore.

Saorstát Éireann, The Irish Free State officially comes into being 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 Saorstát Éireann, the Irish Free State, officially came into being. It had dominion status within the British Commonwealth, like Canada with an Oath of Allegiance to the British king. W.T. Cosgrove was the President of the Executive Council. #Ireland #History

The Anglo-Irish Treaty is signed 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Michael Collins & the Irish delegates sign the Anglo-Irish Treaty ending the War of Independence. Many saw it as a stepping stone to complete independence, others as a stab in the back. Collins stated “I have signed my own death warrant”. #Ireland #History #Brexit

Collins, Griffith & other Irish delegates are given an ultimatum to sign Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Michael Collins, Arthur Griffith & the other Irish plenipotentiaries are issued an ultimatum by British Prime Minister Lloyd George to sign the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Lloyd-George warned “immediate and terrible war” if they did not sign.

Republican Thomas Hand shot dead by Black and Tans at his Dublin home 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Thomas Hand was shot dead when his house was surrounded by Black and Tans in Skerries, Dublin. Hand was branch secretary in the ITGWU, fought with Thomas Ashe in 1916 & was interned in Frongoch. He was also a judge the Republican courts.
