Hi, I'm David, I'm from Ireland. I am an avid fan of history. I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. I wanted to create a podcast that examines, in great detail, major Irish battles and battles allover the world in various wars that Irish people played a significant part in. Hope you enjoy.

The Irish Guards were formed today 1900

#OnThisDay 1900 The Irish Guards were formed by Queen Victoria in recognition of the many acts of courage & bravery performed by Irish regiments during the Second Boer War. 200 Irishmen from the Grenadier Guards made up the nucleus. Colour Sgt Conroy from the Munster Fusiliers was Serial No.1. Their mascot is an Irish Wolfhound, the first being called Brian Boru.

Civil War General and Medal of Honor Recipient St. Clair Augustine Mulholland born in Antrim 1839

#OnThisDay 1839 St. Clair Augustine Mulholland, the American Civil War Brevet Brig. General was born in Lisburn, Co. Antrim. Mulholland was awarded the Medal of Honor at the battle of Chancellorsville in 1863.He later became Chief of Police in Philadelphia.

Marine L/CPL Peter Nee from Connemara KIA in Vietnam 1969

#OnThisDay 1969 L/Corporal Peter Nee from Connemara was killed in action in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam when hit by shrapnel from a 155mm round. Nee joined the @USMarineCorps in 1968. When asked why, as an Irishman, he was fighting for the US in Vietnam, LCpl Nee replied, “for the adventure”

Rosscarbery RIC Barracks attack 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Tom Barry & his Flying Column attacked Rosscarbery RIC barracks in Cork. Using a 400lb mine, grenades &fire, the IRA finally succeeded in destroying the station & its garrison surrendered. Two RIC officers died in the fight & nine were injured. #Ireland #History

Sinn Fein Founder, Arthur Griffith born 1871

#OnThisDay 1871 Arthur Griffith was born in Dublin City. A printer & editor by trade, Griffith founded Sinn Féin & was arrested after the 1916 Rising even though he was not involved. Griffith led the Treaty negotiations & became the President of Dáil Éireann. #Ireland #History
