Irish Trade Unionist, Nationalist & Activist Rosie Hackett Born in Dublin 1893

#OnThisDay 1893 Rosie Hackett was born in Dublin. Hackett was a co-founder of Irish Women’s Workers Union &supported workers in the 1913 Lockout. A member of the ICA, she helped print the Proclamation&was stationed in St Stephen’s Green during the Easter Rising.

Free State Army Attack Westport by Sea 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 The Free State Army launch an attack on Westport from the steam ship Minerva carrying 400 soldiers, an 18 pounder field gun &a Whippet tank. They freed 96 prisoners from a coastguard station but the town had already been abandoned by the AT-IRA.

The Killurin Train Ambush, Wexford 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 The AT-IRA derailed a train carrying Free State Army soldiers & their prisoners at Killurin, Wexford. Two Free State soldiers are killed & 7 wounded. However, despite the firefight distracting the soldiers,the prisoners on board could not escape.

Captain William Buchanan, Army Veterinary Corps

#OnThisDay 1917 Captain William Buchanan, Army Veterinary Corps was killed in action. From Omagh, Buchanan entered the Royal Veterinary College of Ireland in 1910 & was an excellent student gaining the medal for medicine when he graduated in 1914.

Roscommon man PFC Michael Anthony McCormack Drowned in Korean War 1952

#OnThisDay 1952 PFC Michael Anthony McCormack from Taghmaconnell, Roscommon died while serving with the US Army in the Korean War. Serving with the 142nd Quartermaster Group, he drown as his unit crossed a flooded river. He is buried at home in Roscommon.
