I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. RIC Hand Over Dublin Castle to Civic Guard 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 Dublin Castle, seat of British rule in Ireland for centuries is handed over from the Royal Irish Constabulary to Commission Michael Staines & 380 members of the Civic Guard, later renamed An Garda Síochána.

Rifleman Robert Walker from Ballymena KIA 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Rifleman Robert Walker from Ballymena was KIA when on a night patrol with the 13th Royal Irish Rifles he was hit several times in the spine by machine gun fire. He is buried in Ration Farm, La Plus Douve Cemetery.

IRA Volunteers Pat Clancy & Sean O’Connell killed in Kanturk 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 IRA Vol Patrick Clancy from Limerick was bayoneted & shot dead by RIC & British soldiers. Vol.Sean O’Connell was also killed. Both were arrested & killed while “trying to escape”. Funeral goers were searched, questioned & the young men beaten.

Captain James Owen Shine, from Waterford KIA 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 Captain James Owen Shine, from Dungannon, Waterford was killed in action at Messines, serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. His two younger brothers had also been killed in action. Their father, a military doctor buried all his sons.

Fr. Willie Doyle KIA during Battle of Messines 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 Fr. Willie Doyle from Dublin was killed at Passchendaele having run “all day hither and thither over the battlefield like an angel of mercy”. He was chaplain to the 16th Irish Division but was loved by men of all faiths.
