The Battle of Knockdoe 1504

#OnThisDay 1504 The Earl of Kildare defeated the Lord of Clanricarde at the Battle of Knockdoe in Galway. The majority of the fighting was done by Galloglass mercenaries. The first gun used in Irish battle was recorded but it was used as a club not a firearm.

PFC Michael Fitzpatrick, from Mayo KIA Korean War 1951

#OnThisDay 1951 Private Michael Fitzpatrick, from Claremorris Mayo, was KIA in North Korea while tending his wounded comrades in the Battle of the Punchbowl during the Korean War. Fitzpatrick was a medic with the 23rd Inf Reg, 2nd ID. He is buried in Chicago.

General Dan Hogan & Free State Army Retake Dundalk 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 General Dan Hogan & a heavily armed Free State column retake Dundalk after the IRA left. The IRA put a car bomb in a petrol truck to slow their advance. Hogan’s brother was Michael Hogan, Tipperary captain killed in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday.

Sean Mac Eoin & Longford IRA Attack Barracks 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Sean Mac Eoin & Longford IRA successfully attacked the Upper Military Barracks in Longford town. They took 11 rifles, 550 rounds of ammunition, grenades & other equipment. This was then used the next night on another barracks in Ballymahon.

Company Sergeant Major Robert H. Wallace KIA 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 Company Sergeant Major Robert Wallace, from Ballymena was KIA while serving with 2nd Royal Irish Rifles during the Third Battle of Ypres. Following an attack, their lines were heavily shelled. Wallace had also fought in the Boer War.
