I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Lt Henry James Hambleton Shot Dead near Nenagh 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Intelligence officer Lt. H.J. Hambleton (not in pic) was shot dead outside of Nenagh by local IRA. His last words were reportedly “You bastards, you got me at last”. His unit, the Northamptonshires burned several premises in Nenagh that night.

IRA Attack Richard Mulcahy’s Official Residence, Portobello 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 IRA attacked the official residence of the Commander in Chief of the National Army General Richard Mulcahy in Portobello. A grenade was thrown but failed to detonate. The guard was reinforced & the attack was beaten back with the loss of one man.

The Battle of Ballinalee 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Sean MacEoin & Longford IRA men defended the village of Ballinalee from an 11 truck convoy of Black and Tans who aimed to burn it in a reprisal. The firefight began at 11pm on the 2nd & the Tans pulled out at 5am. The IRA had no casualties.

The Siege of Tralee 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 The Black and Tans unleash a fury of reprisals in Kerry for over a week after the capture (&execution) of two policemen. The Siege of Tralee would see them fire on people leaving church,burning down the town hall, killing civilians, curfews etc.

Eileen Quinn, Mother of Four, Shot Dead by Black and Tans, Gort 1920

November 1, 2020 theirishatwar

#OnThisDay 1920 Eileen Quinn, a 23 year old mother of three (who was 7 months pregnant) from Gort, Galway was shot by passing Black and Tans while holding her 9 month old baby in her lap. Eileen was hit in the groin by a bullet & bled to death later that day.
