Corporal John Geoghegan Killed in Friendly Fire Incident, Congo 1961

Captain Timothy Madigan shot dead by Black and Tans, Limerick 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 IRA Captain Timothy Madigan, was shot dead by the Black & Tans at his family home at Clashganniff House, Shanagolden, Limerick for Christmas. Madigan had helped guard General Lucas & had been on the run for months. He was 23 years old.

Constance Markievicz Elected to Westminster 1918

#OnThisDay 1918 Constance Markievicz née Gore-Booth became the first woman elected to the UK House of Commons, though she was imprisoned in Holloway Prison at the time. As a Sinn Féin candidate, she did not take her seat in Westminster but in the Dáil instead serving as the Minister of Labour.

Death of Rev. William Corby, Irish Brigade 1897

#OnThisDay 1897 Reverend William Corby passed away. Corby was a chaplain in the Irish Brigade & is perhaps best known for giving general absolution to his 530 men before the Battle of Gettysburg. Roughly 198 of his flock became casualties in some of the heaviest fighting of the battle.
Corby was also the President of Notre Dame University twice.

Five IRA Killed at Dance in Caherguillamore House, Limerick 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Martin Conway (pic) & four other IRA Volunteers were killed when Black and Tans raided a dance in Caherguillamore House, Limerick which was to raise funds for the Bruff IRA. The deceased were:
