#OnThisDay 1898 An explosion tore USS Maine apart in Havana, killing over 260 crew. Among the dead were: Mike Harrington(Cork)& Joseph Seery(Kildare). Spain was blamed for this which led to the Spanish-American War. The real cause was a fire in the coal bunker.
