#OnThisDay 1917 Cpl John Cunningham, from Thurles, was commanding a machine gun nest that was attacked by 20 Germans. Although wounded he repulsed the attack. When his ammo ran out, he used grenades. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died four days later.
