#OnThisDay 1580 Having failed to help the Desmond Rebellion, 600 Papal troops surrendered to English forces after the Siege of Smerwick, Kerry. Quarter was not given to the prisoners & instead were beheaded & their bodies thrown into the sea. Sir Walter Raleigh was the officer in charge of the executions.
