#OnThisDay 1837 James Lawlor Kiernan was born in Mountbellew, Galway. He joined the New York 69th as Assistant Surgeon but insisted on joining the fighting troops. He fought with the 6th Missouri Cavalry, was shot & left for dead in Mississippi, recovered, captured, escaped & promoted to General in 1863.
