#OnThisDay 1920 Mid-Clare IRA ambush an RIC patrol at Rineen. Led by Ignatius O’Neill (front right), they kill 5 RIC & 1 Black and Tan. They then fight a running battle with 100 British army troops for hours & make good their escape. Terrible British reprisals followed which saw many homesteads being set alight and many civilians shot dead including a 15 year old boy and an old man who burned to death while hiding in his attic when the Crown forces set his house on fire.
