#OnThisDay 1914 Maurice Dease VC from Coole, Westmeath died at the Battle of Mons. Dease was one of the first officers killed & was the first posthumous Victoria Cross recipient in #WW1. Dease was awarded the VC for his actions commanding two machine gun posts while shot three times until all his soldiers were wounded or dead and he took control of the guns until he was killed. His actions allowed the withdrawal of the British army saving countless lives.
